Smart city into a future trend, what role does LED street light play?
2019-04-17

According to a report by the National League of Cities (NLC), 66% of cities in the United States are investing in smart cities, and 25% of cities that do not have smart city systems are exploring this new trend.

What is a smart city? In fact, the answer is all-encompassing, but the most critical feature of a smart city is to connect the entire city (Connected City). In the future, smart cities may be filled with sensors and cameras, so that information can be transmitted instantly.

At present, some cities like California, Washington, etc. have begun to use, analyze the information obtained by sensors and cameras and cooperate with cloud data to solve problems in the city, including energy efficiency, public safety, infrastructure, and transportation. And emergency measures, etc. But how exactly is the 'network' of smart cities connected in series?

At present, “smart cities” are most often mentioned as connecting smart cities. Through smart street lights, they can remotely control their brightness and darkness according to the needs of various regions to save energy. Building smart street lights is a layout smart network system. Many vendors, including Silver Spring Networks, Signify, and Sensus, have developed smart lighting solutions and placed nodes on smart street lights as control points for each unit.

However, the construction of smart street lights is a costly project, and not every city has enough budget to load. In the case of Richmond Hill in Ontario, Canada, the maintenance of 15,000 盏 high-pressure sodium street lamps in the town is expensive, so the town hired renewable energy company Ameresco to replace all street lights with LED street lights, saving about $1.5 million a year. Repair and operating expenses.

Richmond Hill Mayor Dave Barrow said smart cities are a forward-looking investment, but it takes about six to seven years to get back to the market. Replacing street lights with LEDs will reduce costs and protect the environment.

Replacing street lights with LEDs reduces energy consumption by 50% to 60%, while LED street lights last about 20 years, significantly reducing maintenance costs by 80%. The data shows that the replacement of LED lights reduces 575 tons of carbon dioxide per year.

Energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly LED smart street lights create a wireless network for the city, facilitating city management and improving problems.
